Make it stop

Enough with the space marines! I am so done with sci-fi and fantasy. Don’t get me wrong. I’m a big fan of Lord of the Rings too… but for the love of Pac-man find somewhere else to set your games.
Write what you know, they say. Pratchett, Tolkien and Adams seems to about cover it… maybe Ridley Scott. Really, where’s the costume dramas, the historical epics, the game noirs? Hey, what about here and now? Where’s the games about real people experiencing real things in the real world?
And no it does not count if you give them superpowers.
Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl and Assassin’s Creed are a breath of fresh air by comparison. Though both imperfect games, they offer you somewhere new to go. Okay, Stalker has radioactive mutants but you’re still walking around a real place that’s more interesting to explore than any generic high-fantasyland has ever been or ever will be.
I look at this (or this) and I worry about the medium. I like Blizzard, and I’m looking forward to Starcraft 2 as much as the next person but should we be worried that after ten years we’re still making the same games?
